1910 Stevens Duryea XXX Roadster
The Stevens Duryea was a very well built, high quality car built in Springfield, Massachusetts. They began producing four and six cylinder models beginning in 1906 and introduced one of their best models, the model X, in 1909. A 40HP 4 cylinder model with a 3 speed progressive gearbox, the model X was a very well designed car and very reliable. Capable of high speed touring, the Model X was geared towards the luxury market and was an expensive car. At the same time, a sports version of the model X was also offered, the XXX. A short wheelbase roadster variant of the model X with long front fenders, short running boards, mother-in-law seat and special “flyaway” rear fenders. Very few XXX roadsters were produced and only 3 are known to survive today.
Offered here is one of the 3 surviving XXX roadsters presented in a very nicely restored condition and tour ready. Previously owned by Connecticut collector David Reed and then on to William Lassiter and then Bill Alley. As has happened to many early cars, the body and fenders were in a modified “speedster” state when acquired by David Reed in the 1980’s, although the chassis was a very original and correct XXX short wheelbase chassis and in well preserved condition. Mr. Reed owned one of the other XXX Stevens cars and had this car restored by us (Dragone Classic Motorcars) back to its original configuration with the proper fenders and body. Today the car is beautifully restored with a freshly rebuilt engine with a modern electric starter fitted for easy starting. It runs and drives beautifully and can be reliably driven and shown at any concours due to its beautifully restored condition. Contact us for more information about this beautiful Stevens.
