The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most famous and one of the most important production cars in automotive history. On par with the Ford Model T, the Beetle sold by the many millions over a 30 year period in the U.S. It helped bring reliable and affordable transportation to the masses. Air cooled, simple and a car that literally defined an entire generation. By 1979, the beetle had become outdated, especially in terms of safety standards of the time so they were no longer produced for or sold in North America. But, the air cooled beetle would live on. They continued to be produced in Mexico and Brazil for the rest of the world until 2003. They were essentially produced exactly as the standard 1970s beetle with fuel injection. They were also upgraded with hydraulic lifters. These cars were utilitarian so they were well loved and used, many becoming taxis. Volkswagen would eventually thusly shift much of its production to Mexico and Brazil, and that holds true until today.
Today it is actually very rare to find one of these later model air cooled Beetles as they were not meant to be preserved, but this example managed to survive with just 1,100 miles from new on the clock. It is so incredibly well preserved that the underside still retains its original finishes, the hardware on the chassis still retains its original plating and even the tires are original. It retains its original spare wheel and tire and its original tool kit. Its gold paint and cloth interior are also entirely original and preserved in like new condition. This car was found in an estate here in Connecticut where the owner had collected many low mileage original cars. He had purchased this car 20 years ago for his collection. Upon our acquisition the car was treated to a mechanical servicing with fresh gas and a new master cylinder and wheel cylinders. It runs and drives like a new car. If you are looking to have an extremely low mileage air cooled beetle in your collection, this car should certainly be considered. It’s an incredible time capsule.
