1935 Chrysler Airflow C-1

$46,500.00

The Chrysler Airflow was truly the first aerodynamic American car and a car that has become an icon of the Art Deco era. Introduced in 1934, it was a car far ahead of its time in design both aesthetically and mechanically. Extensively tested in a wind tunnel, it was the first time ever for an automobile. While the aerodynamic part of the car is outstanding, the steel, semi unitized body is just as impressive. Airflows have a tubular frame structure inside the body that is attached to the chassis below, a roll cage of sorts, hidden beneath the skin of the body. Chrysler demonstrated this structural strength by pushing one off of a 110 foot cliff and driving it away on film. The design of the car is over the top “Art Deco” initially with the waterfall type grille in 1934, integrated headlights, vee windscreen that opens, fender skirts with “wings”, airplane type seats and gauges, and a rear mounted spare. It has a beautiful flowing look, like its flowing through the air. The name airflow is also dual purpose, while it is an aerodynamic design, the front windscreen can be cranked open and the the rear quarter windows can also be cranked open to have the air flow effortlessly through the cabin of the car, hence the name “Airflow.” Mechanically they have Chryslers powerful flathead straight eight engine paired with a three speed gearbox with a mechanical overdrive for a fourth gear achieving speeds up to 100mph. The engine was mounted more in a forward position in the chassis as is the steering box giving an open, unobstructed floor inside the car for a more spacious layout. The steering column and wheel come straight out of the firewall at a more horizontal angle, almost like a European sports car. These cars are really wonderful and seldom seen today. The first two years of production are the most pure form of the design and are the most sought after years for the Airflow by collectors today.

Offered here is a fantastic original 1935 Chrysler Airflow C-1 with just 37,000 original miles from new. It has been in private ownership in Manchester, Connecticut for the last 45 years. So original that it still retains its original upholstery which is incredibly rare to see in an Airflow today. It retains all of its original details including its original chrome plating, original running boards and even its original wood graining on the dashboard. Finished in its original dark blue color, it seems to have had one repaint at some point, but it was done very well and has held up very well. Under the hood it retains its original straight eight engine is very well preserved, even with its original paint still on the firewall and inner fenders. Mechanically it runs exceptionally well and the mechanical overdrive works flawlessly. With the overdrive engaged, it shifts into gear and can cruise at 80mph effortlessly on the highway. It has also had modern blinkers installed for safety, but can be easily removed if desired without any modification to the car. This is a fantastic preserved low mileage 1935 Airflow that can be shown or driven with great pleasure. This is truly a wonderful car. Contact us to learn more about this car.
